
A phone that suddenly cannot make it to dinner is almost never a dying battery. In my experience it is one badly behaved app, one setting that got flipped during an update, or heat — and those three account for the overwhelming majority of cases people bring me.
The reason this feels mysterious is that the phone does not tell you plainly. It shows a percentage going down and nothing else. So the whole job here is turning that into a name: which app, which setting, which habit. Once you have a name, the fix takes about a minute.
Work through this in order. The first section alone ends it for most people, and each step after that rules something out, so you are never repeating yourself.

The 60-second fix
- Open your battery usage screen and look at the last 24 hours, not the last 10 days.
- Force-quit and then reinstall whichever single app sits at the top with a suspiciously high number.
- Turn the screen brightness off auto-max and set your screen timeout to 30 seconds.
- Restart the phone once, properly, and give it a full day before you judge the result.
Step 1: make the phone name the app that is eating your battery
Both iPhone and Android keep a breakdown of exactly which app spent which share of your battery. Almost nobody opens it, and it is the single most useful screen on the device.
The trick is the time range. The default view often averages over ten days, which smooths out exactly the spike you are hunting. Switch it to the last 24 hours and the guilty app usually sticks out by a mile — something at 35% or 40% when nothing else is above 8%.
- On iPhone: Settings → Battery, then tap "Last 24 Hours" at the top of the graph.
- On Android: Settings → Battery → Battery usage, and choose the 24-hour view if your phone offers both.
- Read the list top to bottom. Note the name and the percentage of the top three.
- Check the split between "screen on" and "background" for that top app — the difference matters a lot, and the next paragraph explains why.
Step 2: deal with that one app properly
There is a strong temptation to just delete it and move on. Before that, try the less drastic version, because a misbehaving app is usually stuck rather than evil — a sync that failed and keeps retrying, a location request that never released, an update that shipped a bug.
Reinstalling clears the stuck state without you losing the account. Nine times out of ten the app returns to a couple of percent a day and you never think about it again.
- Force-quit the app (swipe it away from the recent apps view).
- Open it once, and if it asks for a login or a sync, let it finish completely before you close it.
- If it is still at the top of the list tomorrow, uninstall and reinstall it from the store.
- If that fails too, revoke its background permission: on iPhone, Settings → General → Background App Refresh; on Android, hold the app icon → App info → Battery → Restricted.
Step 3: the three settings that cost more than everything else combined
If no single app stands out, the drain is spread across the system, and that almost always traces back to the screen. On a modern phone the display is comfortably the biggest consumer — more than the processor, the radios and the camera together on a normal day.
- Brightness. Running at full brightness instead of around 50% can roughly double what the screen costs you. Auto-brightness is not the enemy; a phone stuck at maximum because you dragged it up once in the sun is.
- Refresh rate. A 120Hz display looks lovely and costs real battery. Most phones have an adaptive or standard mode — on a bad battery day, standard buys you noticeably more hours.
- Screen timeout. Thirty seconds versus two minutes sounds trivial. Multiply it across the sixty or eighty times a day you glance at your phone and it is not trivial at all.
Step 4: losing 15% overnight means something is awake
A healthy phone on Wi-Fi, untouched for eight hours, should lose somewhere between 1% and 4%. If you are losing 15%, something is running while you sleep, and the battery screen will usually show it as background usage with almost no screen time attached.
The most common causes, roughly in order: a cloud photo backup that keeps failing and retrying, an email account with broken credentials trying to sync every few minutes, a fitness or sleep app holding a wake lock, and a weak Wi-Fi signal at the far end of the house forcing the radio to shout all night.
- Check your photo backup finished. A stalled upload at 97% will retry forever.
- Remove and re-add any email account showing an authentication error.
- Put the phone in airplane mode one night as a test. If the overnight drain disappears, it is a radio or sync problem, not the battery.
- If the phone sleeps far from the router, either move the charging spot or turn Wi-Fi off at night.
Step 5: when it really is the battery
Lithium batteries wear out on a schedule you can read. Most phones hold roughly 80% of their original capacity after two years of normal charging, and that is when the complaints start, because 80% capacity on a phone you already pushed hard feels like half.
There is one symptom that points at hardware rather than software, and it is worth knowing: sudden percentage collapse. If your phone drops from 40% to 12% in a moment, or shuts off at 20% and then boots again once plugged in, the battery can no longer hold voltage under load. No setting fixes that. That is a replacement.
- On iPhone: Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging. Below 80% maximum capacity, a replacement is reasonable.
- On Samsung: Settings → Battery and device care → Diagnostics → Battery status.
- On other Android phones, the figure is often hidden — the free app AccuBattery estimates it over a week of use.
Step 6: heat does permanent damage, and most of it is avoidable
Every hour a lithium battery spends hot is an hour of its life you do not get back. It is not dramatic — the phone will not fail tomorrow — but it is cumulative, and it is why two identical phones bought the same week can have very different battery health two years later.
The realistic list of things that cook a phone: a car dashboard in summer, charging under a pillow or a thick case, gaming while plugged in, and fast wireless charging on a pad with no fan. None of these is forbidden. Just do not make them daily habits.
- Take the case off when you fast-charge or game for a long session.
- Do not charge on a bed, sofa cushion or anything else that traps heat.
- If the phone is hot to the touch, stop charging and let it cool before continuing.
- Avoid leaving it parked on a dashboard or windowsill in direct sun.
Two habits you can stop doing today
Closing all your apps does not save battery. On both iOS and Android, an app in the recent-apps list is frozen, not running. Force-quitting it means the system has to cold-start it next time, which costs more energy than leaving it alone. Force-quitting is a fix for a stuck app, not a routine.
Charging overnight is fine on any phone made in the last several years. They stop drawing current at 100% and modern ones deliberately hold at 80% until shortly before your usual alarm. If your phone offers optimised or adaptive charging, leave it on — it is doing exactly the thing people used to do manually.

How much battery drain overnight is normal?
Between 1% and 4% over eight hours on Wi-Fi, with the phone untouched. Up to about 8% is still acceptable if you have several accounts syncing. Anything above 10% means something is staying awake, and the background section of your battery screen will point at it.
Does closing apps save battery?
No. Apps in the recent-apps switcher are suspended, not running. Closing them forces a full cold start next time you open them, which uses more energy than leaving them suspended. Only force-quit an app that is actually misbehaving.
