
There is a useful diagnostic habit with sound problems: before touching anything, work out whether the silence follows the source or the speaker. If sound is missing from every input, the TV or the speaker is the problem. If it is missing from one app or one box only, the problem is that source's audio settings.
That single question eliminates most of the guesswork, because the two cases have almost nothing in common. People lose entire evenings swapping cables when the real cause was one audio format setting in a streaming app.
Work in this order and you will land on the cause in about ten minutes, without buying anything.

- Check the obvious first: mute, volume, and whether the TV's audio output is set to the right device.
- Unplug the TV and the soundbar at the wall for a full minute, then power the soundbar on first.
- Reseat both ends of the HDMI cable — this fixes a real share of cases and costs nothing.
- If you use a soundbar, make sure the cable is in the port labelled HDMI ARC or eARC on both devices.
Step 1: find out whether it is the TV, the source, or the speaker
This takes two minutes and saves you the rest. You are trying to isolate which of the three parts is silent.
- Switch to the TV's built-in apps or the tuner. If sound works there but not on your console or set-top box, the TV is fine and the source is the problem.
- In the TV's sound settings, temporarily switch audio output to TV speakers. If they work, the TV and source are fine and your soundbar or its connection is the problem.
- Try a different HDMI port on the TV, and a different cable if you have one.

Step 2: the audio output setting, silently changed by an update
Every TV has a setting that decides where sound goes: internal speakers, HDMI ARC, optical, or Bluetooth. Software updates and a newly connected device both reset it, and the TV does not tell you. This is the single most common cause of a TV that suddenly has no sound.
The second trap is that a TV paired to Bluetooth headphones months ago will silently send all audio to them the moment they are powered on somewhere in the house.
- Open Settings → Sound → Sound Output (wording varies slightly by brand) and confirm the selected device is the one you are listening to.
- Check the Bluetooth device list and disconnect any headphones or speakers you are not using right now.
- If output is set to a soundbar that is turned off, the TV will stay silent rather than falling back to its own speakers.
- Turn off any 'audio delay' or 'lip sync' offset you find set to an extreme value while you are in there.
Step 3: ARC and eARC, and why the port matters
ARC stands for Audio Return Channel. It lets a single HDMI cable carry video to the TV and sound back out to a soundbar, which is why you only need one cable. eARC is the newer version with enough bandwidth for uncompressed and object-based formats.
The catch is that only one HDMI port on the TV supports it, and it is labelled — usually HDMI 2 or HDMI 3, marked ARC or eARC. Plug the soundbar into any other port and you get picture with no return audio, which is exactly the symptom people describe.
- Look at the back of the TV and find the port labelled HDMI ARC or eARC. Use that one, and the matching HDMI OUT (ARC) port on the soundbar.
- In TV settings, enable HDMI-CEC. Every brand names it differently: Anynet+ on Samsung, Simplink on LG, Bravia Sync on Sony, Viera Link on Panasonic.
- Enable CEC on the soundbar too — it is usually on by default but worth confirming.
- Power everything off at the wall for a minute, then power on in this order: soundbar first, then TV. CEC handshakes fail surprisingly often when the order is reversed.
Step 4: the audio format mismatch that silences a whole system
This is the cause people almost never find on their own. If your TV or streaming app outputs Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Atmos or DTS, and the soundbar in the chain cannot decode that format, the result is not a warning message — it is silence. Or worse, sound that works on one app and not another, because each app negotiates its own format.
The fix is to force a format everything understands. PCM stereo is supported by literally every device ever made, and on a two-speaker soundbar you lose nothing audible.
- On the TV: Settings → Sound → Expert or Advanced settings → Digital audio output format → set to PCM.
- On a streaming device (Fire TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, set-top box): find Audio settings and set output to Stereo or PCM, and turn off any 'best available' or 'auto' option while testing.
- On a games console: in audio output settings, choose Linear PCM rather than Bitstream.
- If sound returns, step back up one level at a time — try Dolby Digital next — until you find the format that breaks it. That tells you exactly what your chain supports.
Step 5: still silent, and what that narrows it to
If the TV's own speakers play sound from the TV's own apps, the TV is not broken. Everything remaining is in the chain between it and the speakers.
- Bypass the TV entirely as a test: connect the source directly to the soundbar or receiver, and the soundbar to the TV. If sound works, the TV's ARC output is the fault.
- Use the optical cable instead of HDMI. Optical cannot carry the newest formats but it carries stereo and Dolby Digital reliably, and it is an excellent diagnostic.
- Factory-reset the soundbar. Soundbars hold onto a confused input state more stubbornly than TVs do, and a reset is quick.
- If the TV produces no sound on any input, through any output, including its own speakers, the audio board has likely failed and it needs service.
Questions people still ask
Why does my TV have picture but no sound suddenly?
The most common cause is the sound output setting switching away from the device you are using — often after a software update or after a Bluetooth speaker connected. Check Settings → Sound → Sound Output first; it takes fifteen seconds and solves this more often than anything else.
What is the difference between ARC and eARC?
Both send audio from the TV back down the HDMI cable to a soundbar. eARC has far more bandwidth, so it can carry uncompressed and object-based formats like Dolby Atmos over TrueHD. ARC is limited to compressed formats. Both devices and the cable must support eARC for it to work.
Why does sound work on one app but not another?
Because each app negotiates its own audio format. An app outputting Dolby Atmos to a soundbar that cannot decode it produces silence rather than an error. Forcing PCM output in the TV or streaming device settings fixes this immediately.
Do I need an expensive HDMI cable for sound?
